Subject matter:
The poem describes the emotions surrounding the migrants experience of 1949 to 1951. The emotions of the migrants as they stayed at migrant hostel are explored through the physical journey as they lose a sense of belonging and identity migrating to a new place. Theme:
As migrants leave their home and settle into the migrant hostel where they experience a loss of identity and belonging as they journeyed away from home like a homing pigeon searching for its bearing. |
Emotions:
The poem has a negative, depressing mood as migrants leave their home to journey for a better place to stay. Migrants are forgotten as they come and go and they lose their sense of belonging and identity through the course of their journey.

Techniques:
The use of simile was evident where he states "Nationalities sought each other out instinctively - like a homing pigeon circling to get its bearings". This adds meaning and describes how nationalities sought each other out instinctively like homing pigeons searching extreme distances for their home. The technique of imagery is used where we see "a homing pigeon circling to get its bearing". This gives us insight to how nationalities sought each other and gives us a visual imagery to imagine. Alliteration is also noticeable in "No one kept count of all the coming and going". The occurring of the same 'k' gives a better tone for the reader to interpret while reading. |
Summary:
The poem explores migrants of 1947 to 1951 and their emotions towards the journey they travelled and the consequences. It reflects the experiences of living in a lodge as a migrant for 2 years and how the journey had impacted them so much. Belonging and retaining an identity in that society is also explored as well as their stay at migrant hostel.
